This week on the Hero Report podcast, we talk about heroism in the Star Wars movies, rage hopelessly against the prequels, and consider the future of heroism in Star Wars movies.

Tell us what you think about this episode, discuss these issues with us on Twitter (Matt Langdon / Ari Kohen), and join us every Friday on Google+ for our live broadcast (where you can chat with us while we’re on the air and contribute to the conversation).

But, of course, there is a Jedi mind meld (as explained in the Wookiepedia, via Max Temkin):

Force Meld, otherwise known as Jedi meld or Battle meld, was a technique where a number of Force users joined their minds together through the Force, drawing strength from each other. A refinement of battle meditation, it was known to the ancient Jedi, though dangerous. While battle meditation could influence both the Force-sensitives and the insensitives of both sides, Force Meld concentrates on coordinating and improving the Force-sensitives of the user’s side.

Relevant to my interests:

If you ever watched “Star Wars” and longed to wield a light saber of your own, you’re not alone, young padawan. A San Francisco “Star Wars” fan has created a combat choreography class for the Jedi and Sith weapon.
The class is the brainchild of Alain Bloch, a 32-year-old software engineer with a lifelong love of George Lucas’ epic space opera.

Also, the best thing about the whole story is that there’s only one comment on it and that comment is, “’Lightsaber’ is one word.”

Even many working in Hollywood don’t realize a live-action Star Wars TV series has been sitting on the shelf the past few years. The project was commissioned by longtime Lucasfilm producer Rick McCallum, who enlisted writers such as Battlestar Galactica‘s Ron Moore and swore them to NDA secrecy on the plot details (more on the show’s storyline below). Fifty scripts were written. McCallum once called the scripts the most “provocative, bold and daring material that we’ve ever done.”
And then … nothing.
[…]
Sources say the live-action series centers on the story of rival families struggling over the control of the seedy underside of the Star Wars universe and the people who live within the subterranean level and air shafts of the metropolis planet Coruscant (the Empire’s urban-sprawl-covered home planet). A bounty hunter may be the main character. Set between the original Star Wars film trilogy and the prequels, the time period allows for all sorts of potential appearances from classic figures from the Star Wars universe.

Would it surprise you to know that I would watch every second of this and then I would buy it on DVD too? And watch it all again? It probably shouldn’t.

Sometimes I get messages like this one.
And this is what happens in my mind:

No, but seriously for a minute, I have literally no idea why someone would think I would be an appropriate person to answer a question like this.

The official White House response to a petition to secure resources and funding, and begin construction of a Death Star by 2016:

By Paul Shawcross

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn’t on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

  • The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.
  • The Administration does not support blowing up planets.
  • Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

However, look carefully (here’s how) and you’ll notice something already floating in the sky—that’s no Moon, it’s a Space Station! Yes, we already have a giant, football field-sized International Space Station in orbit around the Earth that’s helping us learn how humans can live and thrive in space for long durations. The Space Station has six astronauts—American, Russian, and Canadian—living in it right now, conducting research, learning how to live and work in space over long periods of time, routinely welcoming visiting spacecraft and repairing onboard garbage mashers, etc. We’ve also got two robot science labs—one wielding a laser—roving around Mars, looking at whether life ever existed on the Red Planet.

Keep in mind, space is no longer just government-only. Private American companies, through NASA’s Commercial Crew and Cargo Program Office (C3PO), are ferrying cargo—and soon, crew—to space for NASA, and are pursuing human missions to the Moon this decade.

Even though the United States doesn’t have anything that can do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, we’ve got two spacecraft leaving the Solar System and we’re building a probe that will fly to the exterior layers of the Sun. We are discovering hundreds of new planets in other star systems and building a much more powerful successor to the Hubble Space Telescope that will see back to the early days of the universe.

We don’t have a Death Star, but we do have floating robot assistants on the Space Station, a President who knows his way around a light saber and advanced (marshmallow) cannon, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is supporting research on building Luke’s arm, floating droids, and quadruped walkers.

We are living in the future! Enjoy it. Or better yet, help build it by pursuing a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field. The President has held the first-ever White House science fairs and Astronomy Night on the South Lawn because he knows these domains are critical to our country’s future, and to ensuring the United States continues leading the world in doing big things.

If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star’s power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

Paul Shawcross is Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget

Since this is unquestionably the best response to any petition we can ever hope to receive, can we all agree to stop using that online petition website now?

Just when supporters of a strong military were celebrating their success with a petition to urge the Obama administration to begin building a small moon with the capacity to destroy an entire planet, Gregory Koger returns to the Monkey Cage blog to urge against both wasteful government spending and the potential destruction of trillions of lives.
He is now urging people to sign a new petition to ban the development or deployment of a Death Star or Death Star-esque weapon. Thus far, the petition looks to be as unsuccessful as the original pro-Death Star petition was successful.
Its only signatory is of its creator, one Luke S.
Honestly, if this upstart Luke S. can’t even get noted galactic pacificists and anti-interventionists like Han S., Lando C., Ron P., and Chewbacca W. to sign on, what chance does he think he’s got against a military industrial complex that relishes both a challenge and the chance to push back against the claim that a weapon could ever be too expensive?

As a proud signatory of this important petition, I look forward to learning of our plans to finally crush the Rebel Alliance and bring all the separatist star systems into line.
