Yesterday, I saw a bunch of anti-abortion protesters hanging around outside a local high school with signs that said things like “Rape and Abortion are Wrong for Exactly the Same Reason.”
Today, someone started following me on Tumblr and the above photo was featured on his blog.
These bizarre comparisons of abortion with rape and the death penalty are, of course, very much related. As this Mother Jones piece from last year highlights, they’re talking points of radical anti-abortion group Personhood USA and its Save the 1 campaign:
Save the 1 doesn’t appear to want GOPers like Akin and Mourdock to tone down their rhetoric. Its website features an image of a fetus in crosshairs and the message “Convicted rapists don’t get the death penalty, so why should the innocent child?” as well as another of a baby under a school bus with the headline “Don’t throw the special needs baby or rape-conceived baby under the bus!” The group’s leader, Rebecca Kiessling, is a national advocate on this issue who says she was conceived in rape. “Rape and abortion are wrong for the same reason; they are both violent acts of aggression against another person,” Kiessling said in a press release. “If you really care about rape victims, you should want to protect them from the rapist, and from the abortion, and NOT the baby. A baby is not the worst thing which can happen to a rape victim—an abortion is.”
So, basically, a few things to consider:
- Good work, radical national anti-abortion folks; you’ve gotten ordinary people around the country to parrot your nonsensical ravings word for word;
- Well done, ordinary people; you’ve demonstrated that no matter how absurd something sounds, you’re willing to run uphill with it;
- Drawing false equivalencies is always a good time for everyone … except, I suspect, the women who are made to suffer by people who insist that a ball of cells is a person and that they, by extension, are just like rapists and murderers.
