This is a serious, serious donation to a serious organization. Congratulations to Human Rights Watch and kudos to George Soros.
To put this into some perspective, “It is the largest gift he has made, the largest gift by far that Human Rights Watch has ever received, and only the second gift of $100 million or more made by an individual this year.”
For anyone interested in luring major donors, consider the perspective of the donor in this case:
He said the gift to the organization was “also from my heart,” an acknowledgment of the training in human rights issues and philanthropy that he received from the group when he was just starting to emerge as a major donor.
Or, if you’d rather look at it exclusively from the perspective of the recipient to measure its impact, consider that “Human Rights Watch will use the gift to add about 120 staff members to its team of 300 around the world, expand translation of its reports and open new offices.”
Moving from 300 total staff members to ~420 in one fell swoop is amazing.
And, in his bid for understatement of the year, Ken Roth — HRW’s executive director — said, “This is a transformative grant in more than one way for sure.”
Yes, indeed.
